The best time of year to replace a roof in Minnesota is late spring through early fall, roughly May to October, when daytime temperatures let asphalt shingles seal properly and crews work full days. Late summer and September are the sweet spot: warm enough to seal, past the spring storm rush, and ahead of the first freeze. Winter installs are possible with the right products and hand sealing, but they are the exception.
Asphalt shingles have an adhesive strip that bonds in sunlight and warmth. Installed in the cold, they sit unsealed until spring, which is when wind lifts them. Manufacturers allow cold installs with hand sealing, and CertainTeed's guidance is what we follow, but a September roof simply seals faster and cleaner than a December one.
Scheduling is the other half. Spring hail season fills every roofer's calendar with storm work, so a planned replacement booked in April often lands in June. Booking in late winter for a May start, or in July for a September start, gets you the crew and the weather.
A roof that is leaking, or one totaled by a fall hail storm, does not get to wait for June. We do winter replacements with ice and water barrier across the full deck where conditions call for it, hand sealed shingles, and short weather windows. It costs a little more in labor and takes longer. If the roof is sound but old, the honest advice is to book a spring slot now and let it ride through one more winter.
